Guess the Starting XI Final Standings of 2020

We recap the prediction season that was in all the various forms.

It was a weird season but the Vancouver Whitecaps 2020 season has come to a close. I wanted to take this time to thank everyone for participating in our little contest. You may or may not have noticed that I took a step back from writing on 86Forever. I decided that I would finish off this season’s Guess the Starting XI contest but that it would likely be the last season of it. I could come back for 2021 but as of now, the plan is for me not to run this contest next season. That doesn’t mean it can’t be run. I am more than happy to pass this off to anyone else who would like to keep it going and share all my various spreadsheets and such. With that over with, let’s get into the final standings.

I developed a bunch of spreadsheets chronicling the various scoring configurations we could have and then decided that it would get confusing having eight of standings. Therefore, I elected to go with two…and one ‘everything’ table. First, we have the traditional Overall Standings. We knew the results of this prior to the final match, but we will reiterate it here. Congratulations to IslandLife who secured 245 points (worst three weeks removed). They had a sizeable victory over their next closest opponent AshMan77, who finished with 230. The top three was rounded out by Isabelt at 225. It was tight for fourth as four people were separated by one point! The rest of the standings can be seen below.

Per the request, I also compiled an Overall Standings with the MLS Tournament included. Like our regular standings, this excluded each participant’s worst three matches. Here we had a tie at the top between Isabelt and Islandlife, who each had 287. They were followed closely by Ashman77 with 285. Again, everyone can have a look at the standings below to see where they finished.

Finally, I wanted to compile an ‘everything’ table, just for fun. Best 17 is our regular overall standings. All 20 is without each participant’s worst three matches removed. Best 21 is our standings with MLS is Back tournament included. All 24 is every match without worst three removed (but no monthly bonuses included). Finally, All 24 (with bonuses) is everything. All points earned this season in all the contests.

As I do each season, I also put together some stats on best predictions (I don’t know what else to call it). Of participants with more than 30 points on the season, Airos had the best average lineup score at 9.44. IslandLife was second at 9.32 and AtlantisB was third at 9.23. Mykvechkin led the pack with 4 perfect lineup predictions, but IslandLife and Isabelt scored the most lineup bonus points with 17. Translation, more 10/11 predictions. Of the 24 matches this season, Isabelt and Ashman77 correctly predicted the winner in 13. This was followed by IslandLife and Westsider13 at 12. Of those with more than 100 points on the season, edmondk was the best at predicting the scoreline, averaging 0.88 points per match. They were followed by Airos (0.67) and chuckbiscuits (0.65). Finally, we didn’t have a lot of bonus categories this season, but IslandLife and Isabelt were tops, both securing 36 points this way. They were followed by AshMan77 and AmandaC with 30.
