Guess the Starting XI & Final Score 2019 (MLS Match #6 - Chicago Fire)

New, comments
MLS: Vancouver Whitecaps at D.C. United Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to another season of our Vancouver Whitecaps contest “Guess the Starting XI and Final Score”. As is tradition, thanks to former regular Spencer for starting this several years ago. It has grown into a great contest and I am appreciative of him for the original idea. Like last season, we will break the contest up into the three ‘seasons’: first half, second half, and non-MLS. We will continue to have fun monthly ‘bonus’ prediction categories, with some being based on whatever it topical at the time. Last season we had things like “Robbo post-match quotes”, “yellow cards”, “first goal scorer”, and several others. However, to start the season, we will keep March simple. With that out of the way, let’s remind you all how the scoring is done.

P.S. I would love if someone would create a great little graphic that we could use for these articles!

Contest Details

Contest article will be posted 2-3 days prior to game day.

  • We will keep track of first half, second half, and monthly winners so that late joiners will have something to play for.
  • I will have a separate ‘contest’ for Voyageurs and Champions League.
  • As the MLS season is 34 matches, each half of the season will be based on 17 matches, with your worst two match predictions being dropped. This will allow everyone a few misses or bad guesses throughout the season.
  • Predictions will be ‘valid’ if posted HERE half-an-hour prior to the lineup being officially announced (1 hour before kickoff).

How Scoring is Determined

  • You receive 1 point for every player you correctly guess to be in the Starting XI. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly predicting 10 starters. Receive 3 bonus points for correctly predicting 11 starters.
  • You get 5 points for correctly guessing Win/Lose/Draw.
  • You receive 1 point for correctly guessing each team’s final score. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly guessing both teams final score (for a total of 3).
  • That means, if you correctly predict the Starting XI, Final Score, and Winner, you can earn 22 points!

After each match, I will tally the scores and update the standings, which will be posted with the following match’s prediction article. I will post three sets of standings. First, the results from the previous match. Second, the monthly standings. Third, the first/second half standings (with your worst two match predictions removed).

Match in Review (LA Galaxy) and Preview (Chicago Fire)

There was a lot of optimism from participants that the Vancouver Whitecaps could get their first victory of the season against the LA Galaxy last Friday evening. Edmondk was happy to finally predict a win, but wasn’t rewarded for their optimism. Unfortunately for AlexGangue91, CapsOnTheDrive, Jitsuo, and tecate, they had the correct score (2-0), but had it for the wrong team (Caps).

Only two participants kept the pessimism going, predicting a LA Galaxy victory. This meant that AtlantisB (17 points) and Westsider13 (16 points) finished at the top of the standings. If not for Westsider13’s less than stellar lineup prediction (only 7 correct), they would have taken top spot as they were the only one to predict no Caps player would score. Meanwhile, it was a good thing that I went with my logic brain and didn’t start Venuto or Montero as I initially predicted/feared.

There were a lot of ‘8’ lineup scores this week as multiple people predicted a front three of Venuto, Montero, Reyna. Oops! Slowkid’s “going out on a limb picking Ardaiz” to start wasn’t on as weak of a branch as they probably thought, as Ardaiz did start in place of Montero.

AmandaC apparently DID elected to take a breather as they spoke about Ardaiz and Lass starting but didn’t put EITHER into their lineup. Tisk, tisk. Meanwhile, CapsOnTheDrive’s request to not risky Rusty’s shoulder fell on deaf ears as he started for the second match in a row.

Vancouver now travels to Chicago for another Friday night match, where they will face their former keeper David Ousted. Thus far the back five seems to be a lock, with Hwang and Erice in the midfield. After that it seems to get tricky. There are a lot of options out there right now for the other four positions. Does Felipe or Teibert start? Or both? Who goes at striker? Does Reyna finally get a start again? Do we see Venuto or Lass (or both) on the wing(s)? A lot of question marks for this one.

We have five matches in April, so we will have five opportunities to correctly predict the Whitecaps first scorer. If you do, you receive a bonus ‘3’ points towards your monthly standings ONLY, and not the first half standings. BTW, I will begin posting the first half standings next match as I feel we have enough predictions now to start looking at those. If you are to predict no Whitecaps will score, you need to explicitly state something like that. Simply having a scoreline of 3-0 or whatever will not suffice.

Good luck everyone. For more information about the upcoming match and getting your predictions correct make sure to check out our Know the Enemy piece and Match Preview once they come out in the next 24-48 hours.
