Report Card: Caps vs Quakes R2

Grading the Whitecaps performance after sweeping the Earthquakes

MLS: San Jose Earthquakes at Vancouver Whitecaps Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

So the Whitecaps have done the necessary and completed the sweep of the San Jose Earthquakes. As a team they got what they needed and can look forward to the toughest section of their schedule starting next week against the Sounders. We however, will take a look back to see how each of the players fared individually.

Starters

Stefan Marinovic: 7.0 A fairly quiet evening for the big Kiwi. Unfortunate on the deflection that beat him, but was otherwise there when called upon. I wish he would be a little more commanding from the back.

Jake Nerwinski: 7.0 Stable on both ends of the ball in the first half. Played in a few dangerous crosses which just didn’t quite Failed to return to position after the corner which led to the goal.

Kendall Waston: 7.2 An excellent match from the Captain. Saved a sure goal late in the match and almost stopped the one that got in. Even got himself forward on the right side and put in a very nice cross that was almost buried by Kei Kamara.

Aaron Maund: 6.9 Lost his lunch on the field a the start of the second half. Other than that had a pretty stable, quiet match, which is exactly what you want from a second choice center back.

Brett Levis: 7.3 Timely tackles and clearances. A full value left back. Involved on both ends of the pitch with positive results. Closed down Magnus Erikson all night. If he can continue to perform this way is most certainly the first choice left back.

Christian Techera: 6.8 Not a bad night for the bug, but not a great night either. Was the most pedestrian of the attacking four. Subbed out in the 71st minute for Nicolas Mezquida.

Aly Ghazal: 7.1 Stable in the midfield. Formed a great partnership with Rusty. Closed down the Earthquakes offense all night.

Russell Teibert: 7.3 Quite a shift from Rusty. Played hard on both ends of the ball. Stopped countless San Jose counters, and kept ball control for the caps with smart, short passing.

Alphonso Davies: 7.3 Phonzie had another great match. He roved all over the offensive end. Scored a beautiful goal after a great run. Many exciting runs. Misplayed a few passes in the .

Yordy Reyna: 7.4 Sublime assist on Phonzie’s goal, added another assist on Nico’s. Controlled the midfield with timely runs, incisive passes and some creative dribbling. Caught a yellow just before he was subbed off so he will miss next week’s match against the Sounders.

Kei Kamara: 7.3 Another lunch pail effort from the Sierra Leone international. Was not rewarded on the score sheet but was involved offensively all night. Wether dropping deep to pick up the ball, holding the ball up in the middle and out wide or out and out leading the attack, Kei did it all tonight.

Subs

Nicolas Mezquida: 7.0 Came on in the 71st minute and scored cracker in the 78th. Can’t ask for more from an offensive sub. Is in the running along with E-Money and Brek Shea as the best on the Caps at coming off the bench and affecting the match.

Eric Hurtado: 6.3 Entered the match in the 81st minute for Kei Kamara. Didn’t do a whole lot other than shove someone from behind for a foul and misplay a pass.

Brek Shea: 6.3 Entered the match in the 90th minute.

Carl Robinson: 7.3 Had the team fully prepared for the match. The game plan worked a treat as the team dominated for most of the match (though the stat line showed 51% Has really freed up his attack. Players are interchanging and coming forward at will. Has let alphonso Davies off the leash
