MLS: Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Real Salt Lake Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to another season of our Vancouver Whitecaps contest “Guess the Starting XI and Final Score”. As is tradition, thanks to former regular Spencer for starting this several years ago. It has grown into a great contest and I am appreciative of him for the original idea. Like last season, we will break the contest up into the three ‘seasons’: first half, second half, and non-MLS. We will continue to have fun monthly ‘bonus’ prediction categories, with some being based on whatever it topical at the time. Last season we had things like “Robbo post-match quotes”, “yellow cards”, “first goal scorer”, and several others. However, to start the season, we will keep March simple. With that out of the way, let’s remind you all how the scoring is done.

P.S. I would love if someone would create a great little graphic that we could use for these articles!

Contest Details

  • Contest article will be posted 2-3 days prior to game day.
  • We will keep track of first half, second half, and monthly winners so that late joiners will have something to play for.
  • I will have a separate ‘contest’ for Voyageurs and Champions League.
  • As the MLS season is 34 matches, each half of the season will be based on 17 matches, with your worst two match predictions being dropped. This will allow everyone a few misses or bad guesses throughout the season.
  • Predictions will be ‘valid’ if posted HERE prior to the lineup being officially announced (1 hour before kickoff).

How Scoring is Determined

  • You receive 1 point for every player you correctly guess to be in the Starting XI. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly predicting 10 starters. Receive 3 bonus points for correctly predicting 11 starters.
  • You get 5 points for correctly guessing Win/Lose/Draw.
  • You receive 1 point for correctly guessing each team’s final score. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly guessing both teams final score (for a total of 3).

That means, if you correctly predict the Starting XI, Final Score, and Winner, you can earn 22 points!

After each match, I will tally the scores and update the standings, which will be posted with the following match’s prediction article. I will post three sets of standings. First, the results from the previous match. Second, the monthly standings. Third, the first/second half standings (with your worst two match predictions removed). The first half standings will come in a few weeks, when we have more matches to count.

Match in Review (Columbus Crew) and Preview (Real Salt Lake)

Heading into the last match of March, we had a three-way tie for first place. Who would end up on-top once the dust settled. It came down to whether the Whitecaps won or lost the match. As we all know now, the Vancouver Whitecaps won, meaning that dfree646 was the March victor, as he was the only one of the top 3 to predict said outcome.

For the Columbus match, we had a few notable predictions. Thanks to Robbo rotating the squad, lineup predictions were all over the map, ranging from my terrible ‘6’ to Westsider13 somehow getting 10 correct (congrats!). We had eight (of 27) optimistic predictors, who correctly guessed a Whitecaps victory, with six also getting the final score correct. This meant that scores ranged from Adamhutchison31’s week high of 17 to my pitiful low of 6. As a result, this means that some of us will toss this match in the overall standings while others will see it as a strong performance; just the way I want it!

We now move to a new month and with it a new contest. Sorry everyone, I should have gotten your suggestions last match. As a result, we will go with a simple one. Who will be the FIRST substitute from Carl Robinson. We will leave out the time factor. You just need to name the first player off the bench. Since it is a crap-shoot, we will make it only worth an extra two points. As usual, the ‘bonus category’ will not be a part of the overall standings, just the April standings.

Real Salt Lake. We all remember Snow Ball of 2017. It wasn’t a good match for the Whitecaps. This Saturday, it will be raining rather than snowing, so that is a bit better. However, that could also impact the match. As is usual in MLS, predicting an away draw would be positive, but with how the Whitecaps play on the road, and the poor start from RSL, it is possible that the Caps leave Rio Tinto with a victory.

No major injuries to report, although Yordy Reyna is questionable. Aly Ghazal made his 2018 debut, as a substitute in Columbus, and was certainly a game changer. Does he get a start this week in the altitude? Several players were rested last match, including Efrain Juarez. Do those who were rested get into the match, while we see others left behind in Vancouver to rest? If so, whom?

Time to make your predictions. Don’t forget the first substitute prediction!

Known Out (Updated as information becomes known)
