MLS: Columbus Crew SC at Vancouver Whitecaps FC Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to another season of our Vancouver Whitecaps contest “Guess the Starting XI and Final Score”. As is tradition, thanks to former regular Spencer for starting this several years ago. It has grown into a great contest and I am appreciative of him for the original idea. Like last season, we will break the contest up into the three ‘seasons’: first half, second half, and non-MLS. We will continue to have fun monthly ‘bonus’ prediction categories, with some being based on whatever it topical at the time. Last season we had things like “Robbo post-match quotes”, “yellow cards”, “first goal scorer”, and several others. However, to start the season, we will keep March simple. With that out of the way, let’s remind you all how the scoring is done.

P.S. I would love if someone would create a great little graphic that we could use for these articles!

Contest Details

  • Contest article will be posted 2-3 days prior to game day.
  • We will keep track of first half, second half, and monthly winners so that late joiners will have something to play for.
  • I will have a separate ‘contest’ for Voyageurs and Champions League.
  • As the MLS season is 34 matches, each half of the season will be based on 17 matches, with your worst two match predictions being dropped. This will allow everyone a few misses or bad guesses throughout the season.
  • Predictions will be ‘valid’ if posted HERE prior to the lineup being officially announced (1 hour before kickoff).

How Scoring is Determined

  • You receive 1 point for every player you correctly guess to be in the Starting XI. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly predicting 10 starters. Receive 3 bonus points for correctly predicting 11 starters.
  • You get 5 points for correctly guessing Win/Lose/Draw.
  • You receive 1 point for correctly guessing each team’s final score. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly guessing both teams final score (for a total of 3).

That means, if you correctly predict the Starting XI, Final Score, and Winner, you can earn 22 points!

After each match, I will tally the scores and update the standings, which will be posted with the following match’s prediction article. I will post three sets of standings. First, the results from the previous match. Second, the monthly standings. Third, the first/second half standings (with your worst two match predictions removed). The first half standings will come in a few weeks, when we have more matches to count.

Match in Review (LA Galaxy) and Preview (Columbus Crew)

Does anyone read these reviews?

It was another interesting match from the Vancouver Whitecaps. Several of us, including myself, had Jordon Mutch starting again, typically in place of Yordy Reyna. However, even when I was making that prediction, I KNEW that I was going to be wrong. Mutch (nor Felipe) were going to play in Reyna’s position. Admit it, you knew that too. Like many of you, thinking ‘who is playing best’ versus ‘what is the likely lineup’ cost me the perfect lineup and 3 points. Oh well.

Five participants didn’t have the problem I and others faced, and correctly predicted the lineup for the full 11 points and 3 bonus points. Included in those five were last match’s co-leaders dfree646 (now if only you could be as consistent with winner and score predictions) and newcomer CascadiaCrunchFC. However, their optimism on the Whitecaps success, along with many of you, saw their March lead be co-opted by ME!

AtlantisB and Westsider13 paced everyone this week with 16 points each, thanks to being the only two predictors to say it was going to be a draw. As a consolation prize to everyone else, some of you received a ‘score’ point for correctly predicting 0 goals from LA. Problem was, you predicted goals from Vancouver. At least you got 1 point though right!

We had a Doneil Henry sighting, thanks to JStebeck. Sorry, but I think you may have been a week early (more on that later). Meanwhile, progers50 just missed out on a perfect lineup, thanks to inserting Maund twice. I suspect you meant Mutch. Stupid autocorrect!

Oh...right, the match preview!

Vancouver heads to Columbus with a fairly healthy squad. We should see some rotation, but Captain Kendall will be back. With his suspension being overturned, it is clear he will be starting. However, maybe one of the biggest questions comes with who plays beside him. Maund started the season in that position, but Aja has played well when called upon. As noted above, Henry is now into the mix as well, with him back training with the club.

While we can be fairly confident that Kamara will occupy the striker role for most matches this season, especially against his old club this weekend, the questions will always come about who slots into the midfield. As noted, Reyna has not performed well to begin the season, but the Caps really do not have many other options. They could go with Felipe in that position, with Mutch and Juarez playing deep, however, Felipe has not played #10 since his days with Montreal. Don’t forget, Aly Ghazal is back, as he was on the bench against LA.

At some point, Davies has to sit, just to give him a rest, but hard to do that when he is one of the best players on the field each and every match. Techera did not look the best against LA, but he needs consistent opportunities to get into a groove. Moreover, no one else can deliver dead balls as well as him, if he is on.

Can the Caps capitalize in Columbus against the Crew (I know, too many ‘C’)? They have been successful on the road and Columbus likes to push, making them vulnerable to the counter. Could be a good match to get back on a winning streak.

With one match left in March, we have a three-way tie for top spot and 9 within a correctly predicting winner (5 points) from the top. Should be a great last match of March. Good luck!
