Kendall Waston makes ESPN’s players’ survey for the most difficult to play against

New, 2 comments

ESPN’s annual MLS Confidential anonymous survey reveals that Kendall Waston is declared by his peers to be the third hardest to play against in MLS. We look at the rest of the results and note what stood out most for us, and get your opinion on the subject.

MLS: Vancouver Whitecaps at Atlanta United FC John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

For the fourth year in a row, ESPN conducted their preseason MLS Confidential survey, in which they asked questions including the USA failed World Cup qualifying, promotion/relegation, and the most over and under rated players in MLS. In total, 104 players participated, with representatives from every MLS club except for NYCFC. Stupid Man City B!

While we won’t get into all the results, there are a few that were of interest. No surprise, when asked “if you were commissioner for a day, what one thing would you change”, 36% would either increase or abolish the Salary Cap. Coming in third with 12%, and I think often overlooked by fans, was the desire for charter flights.

With so many international players now in MLS, it is understandable why 63% of those surveyed would favor promotion and relegation. However, it is worth noting that the number is in-line with previous season. In 2017, 54% favored it, with 49% in 2016, and 64% in 2015.

Relevant to Vancouver Whitecaps fans, after two weeks ago, 58% of respondents said that VAR has had a positive impact on the game, with 29% saying it was too early to tell.

Giovani dos Santos was selected (11%) as the most overrated player in MLS. Reading the articles about Ibrah’s arrival in LA, it seems even Galaxy fans are in agreement with that assessment. TFC teammates Michael Bradley (10%) and Jozy Altidore (7%) rounded out the top three.

Ignacio Piatti was identified as the most underrated by 7% of participants, while Dax McCarty (6%) and Cristian Roldan (5%) rounded out the top three.

The only Vancouver Whitecaps player to make any of the lists was Kendall Waston, who was ranked as the fourth toughest individual opponent in MLS, by 4% of respondents. Giovinco and Villa led the way with 10%, followed by Piatti at 5%.

While Carl Robinson was not listed as the “current coach would you most like to play for”, he also did not make the list of the “least like to play for”.

Have a look at the survey and let us know if any other results stood out to you, and whether you agree with the above findings. Who is the most over and under rated players? Which opposition player do you worry about most when the Caps play a match?
