Guess the Starting XI and Final Score (MLS Match #4 -LA Galaxy

New, 33 comments

After an adventure in Georgia, the Vancouver Whitecaps are back home to take on Western foe, and new Ibrah-show destination, LA Galaxy. Make sure to get your Lineup and Final Score predictions in.

Welcome to another season of our Vancouver Whitecaps contest “Guess the Starting XI and Final Score”. As is tradition, thanks to former regular Spencer for starting this several years ago. It has grown into a great contest and I am appreciative of him for the original idea. Like last season, we will break the contest up into the three ‘seasons’: first half, second half, and non-MLS. We will continue to have fun monthly ‘bonus’ prediction categories, with some being based on whatever it topical at the time. Last season we had things like “Robbo post-match quotes”, “yellow cards”, “first goal scorer”, and several others. However, to start the season, we will keep March simple. With that out of the way, let’s remind you all how the scoring is done.

P.S. I would love if someone would create a great little graphic that we could use for these articles!

Contest Details

  • Contest article will be posted 2-3 days prior to game day.
  • We will keep track of first half, second half, and monthly winners so that late joiners will have something to play for.
  • I will have a separate ‘contest’ for Voyageurs and Champions League.
  • As the MLS season is 34 matches, each half of the season will be based on 17 matches, with your worst two match predictions being dropped. This will allow everyone a few misses or bad guesses throughout the season.
  • Predictions will be ‘valid’ if posted HERE prior to the lineup being officially announced (1 hour before kickoff).

How Scoring is Determined

  • You receive 1 point for every player you correctly guess to be in the Starting XI. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly predicting 10 starters. Receive 3 bonus points for correctly predicting 11 starters.
  • You get 5 points for correctly guessing Win/Lose/Draw.
  • You receive 1 point for correctly guessing each team’s final score. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly guessing both teams final score (for a total of 3).

That means, if you correctly predict the Starting XI, Final Score, and Winner, you can earn 22 points!

After each match, I will tally the scores and update the standings, which will be posted with the following match’s prediction article. I will post three sets of standings. First, the results from the previous match. Second, the monthly standings. Third, the first/second half standings (with your worst two match predictions removed).

Match in Review (Atlanta United) and Preview (LA Galaxy)

Well...that was interesting now wasn’t it! While the 4-1 score was not what we all wanted, it didn’t really seem to matter, as most of has had no idea what to predict. rtomsheck was so uncertain, they changed their prediction three times! Don’t worry though, I don’t mind.

There were some surprise starters, including Blondell in for a sick Kamara. Some of us made last minute changes, to include him in the lineup, but in my case, I made the switch, along with putting Reyna in for Mezquida. In the end, all the changes each of us made resulted in the same number of correct guesses. What to take from this? Don’t tinker too much, because it won’t matter!!

Another surprise was the three-CB lineup. Only one person, AmandaC correctly predicted Waston, Maund and Aja. What was their lineup score? Why, the same as everyone else, 7! One person who bucked the ‘7’ lineup prediction score this week was dfree646, who, somehow, predicted 10 of 11. They seem to have picked up where they left off last year with correctly predicting the lineup. They have to be cheating somehow right! No one is that good!

Unfortunately, dfree646 could not ride that great lineup prediction to the top this week, as they picked Vancouver to win. However, the next best lineup score (9) came from CascadiaCrunchFC, who used that to propel them to a tie for top honors with week with...ME! WOO HOO!!!! Sorry, got excited there for a minute. Where was I....right...Congrats to CascadiaCrunchFC, for correctly predicting an Atlanta win. I can’t believe I just said that. And, as for your comment in your prediction. No problem. I enjoy this, so I am happy to run the contest!

Surprisingly, far too many (in my eyes) participants believed in the Caps ability to stop Atlanta, and incorrectly predicted a Vancouver Whitecaps victory. Sure, the Waston red card made that unlikely, but I would have been surprised if they pulled out a victory even without the red card against them. Hence why I almost got the score correct (stupid late goal) with a 3-1 Atlanta prediction.

Moving on to Saturday, the Caps will be back home to face the Zlatan-less LA Galaxy. As others have mentioned though, not like he would have played here anyway, because of the turf. BAH! It is expected that Marcel de Jong will be back, so look for him at left back. With Kendall Waston away on international duty, I don’t see an option to go with three-at-the-back, further making me believe that if de Jong can go, he is in the match. It also means that we see the eagerly anticipated (HA!) duo of Maund and Aja at the back. Should be interesting.

Really though, where there is the most intrigue is in the midfield. Being one of the strongest performers in each of their first three matches, you have to think that Davies is in. Juarez is probably in too. Felipe is an every-match starter. Mutch looked great with his pass to Hurtado and his shoving of Nagbe. Surely he starts right? Maybe not, because it is a home match? Reyna came off the bench in the last match, and has not looked great his first two. However, Mezquida didn’t do much either against Atlanta, so do we see Reyna come back in? What about the forgotten Techera? He was great in preseason and then was superb in the home opener, and then has sat on the bench since. Sadly, Teibert is probably not going to see the field again until Voyageurs right? Will be interesting to see who starts on Saturday.

Finally, the Caps have been touting their 10-game unbeaten at home streak all week. I just see that as a recipe for disaster! Feel like they are jinxing themselves, but we will see.

Now it is time to make your call!
