Whitecaps on Loan, And The U23 Team I Guess (September 2018)

MLS: 2018 Portraits USA TODAY Sports

Spencer Richey:

It was a big month for Richey. He played in a 2-1 win against Pittsburgh while winning man of the match, played in a match that had to be postponed against Louisville which eventually finished 1-0 with Richey once again winning man of the match, played in a 4-3 win over TFCII and played in a 2-1 win over Penn F.C. Richey’s performances helped Cincinnati clinch the USL supporter’s shield.

David Norman Jr.

Loaned to Queen of the South at the end of September, Norman made two 10 minute cameo appearances.

Fresno Players:

Noah Verhoevan: Played 63 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Reno and played 45 minutes against the Whitecaps reserves

Matthew Baldisimo: Played 90 minutes for the Whitecaps reserves against Fresno, and played 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Portland Timbers 2.

Myer Bevan: Played 7 minutes against Reno, played 45 minutes against the Whitecaps Reserves, played 27 minutes in a 1-0 loss against Swope Park Rangers, played 90 minutes on the wing in a 1-0 loss against Orange County, played 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Portland Timbers 2 in which one of his shots lead to a goal off a rebound and played 90 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Rio Grande Valley.

Cory Brown: Played 90 minutes against Reno, played 90 minutes for the Whitecaps reserves, played 45 minutes against against Swope Park Rangers and played 45 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Rio Grande Valley.

Terran Campbell: Didn’t play for Fresno, but did play 69 minutes (nice) for the Whitecaps reserves team in the friendly against Fresno.

The Reserve Team:

The Whitecaps have started a reserve team. You can be forgiven for not knowing this as the Whitecaps have barely aknowledged it’s existence but you’d better believe it’s happening! This team played a friendly against Fresno. These are the players that played:

Hasal, Mukumbilwa, Metcalfe, Brown, Matthew Baldisimo, Michael Baldisimo, Campbell, Colyn, Bair, Escobar, Hernandez.

Vasco Fry and Jefferson Alade came on as subs in the 69th minute (nice).

Terran Campbell, Matthew Baldisimo, and Cory Brown are all signed to Fresno. Simon Colyn has a first team contract, and Bair and Michael Baldisimo will join the first team in 2019. Patrick Metcalfe, formerly of WFC2, TSS Rovers, and the UBC Thunderbirds also joined the squad. The rest of the team are academy players.

The match started brilliantly for the young team with Theo Bair and Simon Colyn scoring early goals to put the young ‘Caps up 2-0. In the second half Fresno, who played a mostly second choice squad, introduced a number of players from their PDL side, as well as first team players Frank Toyou and Renato Bustamente. This gave Fresno a huge boost as they stormed back with four unanswered goals. Bustamente had two goals and two assists and Fresno PDL player Diego Casillas contributing two assists. Second half sub Jefferson Alade (who now has 5 goals in 6 appearances between the U19s and the reserves) pulled a goal back but it wasn’t enough as Fresno took the 4-3 victory.

I believe the reserves are scheduled to play the Mexico U20 national team in October but the Whitecaps seem to be doing whatever they can to hide this team so I may be mistaken about that. Hopefully in 2019 they will be able to schedule more regular games for the reserves as one game a month is woefully inadequate if this team hopes to be a substitute for WFC2.
