Guess the Starting XI and Final Score (MLS Match 05: Real Salt Lake)

Welcome back for another season of our contest "Guess the Starting XI and Final Score". As always, thanks to former regular Spencer for starting this several years ago. Like last season, we will keep the non-MLS and MLS standings separate. We will also do a first half, second half, and overall standings. Finally, I will have various monthly contests where we add in an ‘extra’ thing to predict, like goal scorers, cards, suspensions, etc. With the basics out of the way, let’s get to the scoring.

MLS Scoring Details

· Contest article will be posted 2-3 days prior to game day

· We will keep track of overall, first/second half, and monthly winners so that late joiners will have something to play for

· I will have a separate ‘contest’ for Voyageurs and Champions League.

· As the MLS season is 34 matches, the overall standings will be based on each participant’s top 30 match guesses. This will allow everyone a few misses or bad guesses throughout the season.

· Predictions will be 'valid' if posted prior to the lineup being officially announced (1 hour before kickoff)

How Scoring is Determined

· You receive 1 point for every player you correctly guess to be in the Starting XI. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly predicting 10 starters. Receive 3 bonus points for correctly predicting 11 starters.

· You get 5 points for correctly guessing Win/Lose/Draw.

· You receive 1 point for correctly guessing each team’s final score. Receive 1 bonus point for correctly guessing both teams final score (for a total of 3).

· That means, if you correctly predict the Starting XI, Final Score, and Winner, you can earn 22 points!

At the end of each week, I will tally the scores and update the standings, to be posted with the next week's match thread.

I am posting TWO different sets of standings. The first is the first half standings. The second is removing each participants four worst weeks

Match in Review (LA Galaxy) and Preview (Real Salt Lake)

Well, that was an exciting match wasn't it! The Caps were victorious over LA, thanks to a flurry of late goals. We had two participants (MarcusEarth and Zee Samnani) make their first predictions of the season. Both started strong, predicting a Caps victory. Bad news, they have a bit of catching up to do. Good news, we remove each participant's worst 4 matches, so they are fine!

Predicting a Caps victory propelled Arjon to a familiar position (1st), as well as chuckbiscuits and AtlantisB to 3rd. Not predicting a Whitecaps victory dropped Jph003 out of 1st, but only one point behind Arjon. Interestingly, because of the changes to how points are awarded for 'Score', several participants picked up a point for correctly guessing 2 goals for LA, despite guessing a draw or LA victory. I must say, I like the changes we have made to scoring. a special kudos to Arjon for his great suggestions. I think the bonus points for lineup have worked great too. It seems that 9 is a common lineup prediction, so getting that extra point (or three) for predicting 10 or 11 starters has been great.

Despite the loss to Tigres, the Vancouver Whitecaps have looked better in their last two matches. RSL has been decimated with injuries and have not performed thus far, so the Caps could be able to sneak out of Rio Tinto Stadium with a victory.

Like RSL, the Whitecaps are dealing with their own injury crisis. With the injuries to Erik Hurtado and Brek Shea, the forward corp has been decimated. The obvious start for Saturday is Fredy Montero, but I am not so sure. He played 45 against LA and 90 against Tigres. The team is now playing at Mile High, on short rest. As a result, we could see Kyle Greig get his first MLS start on Saturday, with Montero coming on late.

I would have said that Alphonso Davies was sure to start this match, after sitting out against Tigres, but when he was called into duty 8 minutes into the match, due to a Brek Shea injury, my thoughts changed. Yes, Davies is a game-changer, but Carl Robinson also noted he will have to 'manage' his minutes. I wouldn't be surprised if Davies starts on the bench; but that decision is up to you to decide.

With a short rest, an away match, and at a notoriously difficult place to play (due to altitude), lineup and score predictions could be a challenge yet again. We will see what you all come up with.

P.S. Don't forget that the Whitecaps FC 2 play their home-opener on Saturday, so many of the young players will be in that match too.

KNOWN OUT (Will be updated as information becomes available)

Injury: David Edgar, Brett Levis, Yordy Reyna

Possible Injury: Erik Hurtado, Brek Shea

Suspension: None
