The Vancouver Whitecaps have re-signed midfielder Nico Mezquida to a new contract that will carry through 2018. According to the WhitecapsFC.com release, it also includes an option for 2019.
"It is a privilege to play for an amazing team in a soccer city," added Mezquida. "The fans and friends in Vancouver have made me feel at home. I hope to help write history with the team and all of you."
Since joining the club in 2014, Mezquida has knocked in nine goals and four assists, and was last year’s Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero award winner.
Mezquida was injured to start the season, but made his first appearance as a substitute in last week’s 0-0 draw with the Philadelphia Union. With Yordy Reyna and Christian Bolanos still nursing their injuries, Mezquida has an opportunity to prove just how important he can be for this club, which is still looking for a Pedro Morales-esque play-maker. The re-signing is clearly a sign the Whitecaps feel he has an important part to play in the attacking midfield, and fans will hope Mezquida can prove that as the season progresses.
