The Vancouver Whitecaps finished up their pre-season in Portland on Wendesday, as they fell to the Portland Timbers 2-1. That means the finish the tourney with two draws and a loss.

The Whitecaps used a veteran-heavy lineup, with David Ousted in net, Kendall Waston and Tim Parker partnering at Center Back, and Jake Nerwinski and Jordan Harvey on the wings. Matias Laba and Russell Teibert took the defensive mid spots, while the attack was comprised of Alphonso Davies, Giles Barnes, Marcel De Jong, and Erik Hurtado.

The Timbers started the party early, with Diego Valeri getting on the board in the 26th minute. Diego Valeri was left alone in the Whitecaps box, and he was able to push a header low and wide past David Ousted.

The Timbers would score their second of the contest just two minutes later, again taking advantage of some sloppy defensive positioning by the Whitecaps. This time, it was Fanendo Adi scoring the goal.

The Whitecaps were out-matched on the night, and the score would have been worse if not for some timely saves by David Ousted, including a pair of sensational stops in the 70th minute.

Vancouver would try to claw back late in the second half, lead by Cristian Techera’s 80th minute beauty.

That was as close as they would come, however, as the Timbers prevailed 2-1.

The Whitecaps have some time off now, as they prepare for Champions League play, and the MLS Regular Season Opener in March.
