Russell Teibert scored a beautiful goal, as the Vancouver Whitecaps drew with expansion side Minnesota United FC 1-1 in pre-season action on Thursday. The teams are playing in the Portland Timbers Pre-Season Tournament, and the match took place at Providence Park.
Head Coach Carl Robinson went with a similar lineup to the ones he trotted out during the Whitecaps UK adventure, with David Ousted in net and Jacob Nerwinski and Jordan Harvey taking the wings. Kendall Waston earned his first start of the pre-season at Center Back, paired with Tim Parker. Parker had been paired with Christian Dean in the UK. Andrew Jacobson and Matias Laba took their spots in the defensive midfield, while Alphonso Davies, Kekuta Manneh, Cristian Techera, and Erik Hurtado made up the attack.
All of the scoring came in the second half of the contest. First, Minnesota got on the board in the 49th minute, thanks to an Erik Hurtado own goal. It was a tough break for Hurtado; Minnesota took a corner that deflected off his head and past David Ousted.
Down by a goal, the Whitecaps pushed hard and carried play for the rest of the match, eventually tying things up in the 82nd minute. Russell Teibert was ‘Johnny-on-the-spot’, firing a shot into the low right corner to make it 1-1. The play came after some good work by Yordy Reyna, who was able to dance his way into the box before the ball made it’s way to Teibert.
The Whitecaps continue the Portland tournament on Sunday, when they take on Real Salt Lake.
