The Vancouver Whitecaps kicked off their pre-season in the United Kingdom, with a 1-0 loss to Cardiff City FC’s U-23 squad on Friday morning.
The Whitecaps had plenty of regulars in their lineup in the first half, including David Ousted in net. On the backline, Head Coach Carl Robinson went with an all-american look, including Tim Parker and Christian Dean as Center Backs, rookie Jacob Nerwinski as Right Back, and last year’s Team MVP Jordan Harvey on the left side.
Defensive mid stalwart Matias Laba paired with Andrew Jacobson, while the attack was comprised of Alphonso Davies and Marcel de Jong on the wings, Kekuta Manneh in a more central role, and Erik Hurtado as the lone striker up top.
After 45 minutes, the club trotted out some of their younger players. including Marco Bustos, Ben McKendry, Thomas Gardner, and the newest WFC2 signing, David Norman.
The only goal of the contest came in the 48th minute, when Cardiff trialist Sobwale took advantage of a Whitecaps turn-over, scoring from about 20 yards out.
The Whitecaps continue their pre-season in the UK on Monday, when they tangle with Oxford United FC.
