While the Vancouver Whitecaps were (essentially) eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday, thank to a 1-0 loss to Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders, there is still a Vancouver Whitecaps team that we can cheer on in the playoffs: the ThunderCaps.
The often forgotten USL-affiliate Vancouver Whitecaps 2, often referred to as the ThunderCaps thanks to playing at UBC Thunderbird Stadium, are closing in on beginning their first playoffs. While they had a poor first season in 2015, the ThunderCaps have had a successful turnaround in 2016. They started their campaign with an impressive 10-game undefeated streak, securing 6 wins and 4 draws during that stretch. Although they have stumbled over their last 10, winning only once (with 5 losses), the ThunderCaps will close out their 2016 USL regular season on Wednesday night, against OKC Energy FC, before starting their playoff matches next week.
In an effort to make the ThunderCaps more of a Greater Vancouver team, rather than a Whitecaps affiliate, the ThunderCaps have played several home matches away from UBC. As a result, their final match will take place at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley (7pm kickoff). So, make sure to get out and support the playoff bound Whitecaps team. They deserve your support as they have been a fantastic product this year with plenty of exciting matches.
