WFC2 are still undefeated in the 2016 USL Pro season, as they topped the Tulsa Roughnecks FC 3-2 on Wednesday at UBC. It was Star Wars night, (May the Fourth be with you) a heavily advertised theme night which saw the club really go all out.
The WFC2 twitter feed spat out more Star Wars references than a Kevin Smith movie for the entire match, and it's worth a definitely worth a quick scroll.
For all of the buzz before the match, the WFC 2 certainly had a rough start after the first kick. They went down 1-0 in the 11th minute thanks to a goal from midfielder Carlos Martinez. Marco Bustos nearly replied in the 20th minute with a nice shot, but it rattled off the post and kept the Whitecaps down.
That was all the goal scoring the first half had to offer, with far more action in the second. Vancouver subbed two game changers into the lineup, with Daniel Haber and Captain Kyle Grieg entering the match in the 60th, and 66th minute respectively.
Less than a minute after he came in, Grieg scored his fifth of the season with some help from Kadin Chung. The 17 year old Chung was able to pull of a spectacular spin move before feeding Grieg for the goal.
In the 79th minute, the Roughnecks struck back with their second goal of the contest.
The lead was short lived however, as Kianz Froese equalized for Vancouver in the 85th minute. Froese made a nice move, then launched his shot past the keeper to make it 2-2.
In the final moments of the match, Haber completed the comeback to keep the WFC2 undefeated at 4-0-2. Erik Hurtado played a nice ball to Haber, who made no mistake in putting the Whitecaps ahead.
WFC2 are next home to the LA Galaxy II on May 15th.
