Like their MLS counterparts, WFC2 had a slew of players away on International duty, including Marco Bustos, Marco Carducci, Kadin Chung, and young stand-out Alphonso Davies. The starting 11 saw a 4-2-3-1 formation with Victoria native Sean Melvin in net, making his professional debut at the age of 21. The backline consisted of Chris Serban, Sem De Wit, Jackson Farmer and Jordan Haynes, while Will Seymore and Mitch Piraux partnered in the defensive midfield. That saw Brett Levis, Thomas Gardner and Daniel Haber in the attacking midfield, and Captain Kyle Grieg taking his spot atop the formation.
Grieg, a three year USL veteran who joined WFC2 in the off-season, had a couple of good scoring chances on the night. In the 20th minute, he pushed up the pitch, backing a defender back into the box before he cut to his left, getting a quality shot that Orange County Goalkeeper Brandon Miller had to parry away.
Grieg would break through in the 59th minute, as he headed home a Piraux freekick that Miller couldn't get a piece of.
It was a lead the team would never reliquinsh, as they earned three points to open the 2016 USL season.
The team is in action on Saturday, when they take on the Timbers 2 on the road.
