The Vancouver Whitecaps have confirmed a widely known rumor, officially adding forward Cristian Techera on loan for the rest of the 2015 season. The deal also includes a transfer option.

The 22 year old stands at just 5'2, and joins Vancouver from Club Atlético River Plate Montevideo of the Uruguayan Primera División. The Whitecaps news release lists him as a wide midfielder, perhaps the 'true winger' Carl Robinson has said he's been searching for.

At just 5'2 and 150 lbs, there are obvious question marks surrounding Techera as he makes the transition to rough, physical MLS play. That being said, you have to give Head Coach Carl Robinson the benefit of the doubt when it comes to player acquisition (see: Rivero, Morales, Waston, etc), and he must see some real skill from the youngster. Thankfully, we can see some of that skill thanks to Youtube.

Some interesting tidbits from the 'Caps news release:

  • During the last three seasons at River Plate, Techera was teammates with striker Leandro Rodriguez, the younger brother of Whitecaps FC centre back Diego Rodríguez
  • Techera was also teammates with Whitecaps FC attacking midfielder Nicolas Mezquida on the regional team of Paysandú.

"I am very happy and excited to join Whitecaps FC," add Techera. "I will work hard to support the team and will do everything I can to help our team achieve our goals."

Techera notched 10 goals in 24 matches for Riverplate this season.

What do you think, 'Caps fans? Excited by the move?
