Octavio Rivero named MLS Player of the Month

The young designated player has made a red hot start to his first season in Major League Soccer and now has been rewarded for his efforts with the Etihad Airways Player of the Month award for March.

Talk about hitting the ground running. Octavio Rivero has captured the Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month award after playing only four games in the league since joining the Vancouver Whitecaps as a young designated player on Christmas Day. He is tied on the top of the scoring charts with his three strikes coming in the opener against Toronto FC, the road win vs the Chicago Fire and, most impressively perhaps, at Orlando City in the 97th minute. Anyone who has watched the 23-year-old Uruguayan in action this year will be well aware that he brings a lot more to the table than just goals though, and it will be fascinating to see him progress further as the season transpires.

Rivero’s work-rate throughout the ninety minutes is infectious and has served as motivation to both his team-mates and to supporters to this point. The way he calculates his movement in the final third and his ability to bring those around him into the attack have made the Caps a far more complete side going forward this campaign. It feels like the club have replaced everything Futboldermort offered in 2013 and much more. The underwhelming summer collapse of last term doesn’t seem to have the same sense of inevitability this time around and the team are yet to reach their full capacity; the prospect of El Cabeza leading the line with the guys behind him firing on all cylinders is one that should fascinate. In essence, there’s an awful lot to be happy about with the latest Carl Robinson special in the transfer market.

Fans voted on over the last few days. Here are the full results:

Way to go, Octavio – we all look forward to more of the same!
