Just a day after a rivalry game between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers, the ‘junior’ Whitecaps, referred to by us here as the Thundercaps (is that catching on elsewhere?), will be kicking off their inaugural season against another Cascadia rival, Seattle Sounds FC. Led by Alan Koch, the Thundercaps will be suiting up at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Washington, at 4pm. Fortunately, for Whitecaps fans, the USL will be broadcasting the game on YouTube HERE. Unfortunately, it is anyone’s guess as to what the starting lineup will be. Rules stipulate that at least half of the players on the field must be Canadian, so expect a heavy local contingent. Whether that means we will see players like Marco Carducci or Kianz Froese is unclear. The Canadian component also clouds the number of opportunities players like Christian Dean and Tim Parker will see with the Thundercaps. Nevertheless, it should be an good season and we are excited to see what is coming down the pipeline for the Whitecaps of the future and the Canadian National team.

We will be updating this post as game-time approaches and will be providing some in-game and post-game comments and we encourage you all to join us and cheer on the Thundercaps, making arguments for Ben McKendry, for example, playing in the senior team over whipping boy Darren Mattocks….or something. Ah, the joys of having a USL team: more opportunities to argue who should be getting first team minutes and who should not!
