With the second leg of the MLS Western Conference semi-final between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers still an eternity away, now is a good time to look back at some of the highlights from the Whitecaps' 2015 season.
For fans of the beautiful game there are many different ways to measure the 'success' of any given year: silverware, victories, spectacular saves or other moments of individual brilliance, but for our purposes we will look a closer at the aforementioned moments of individual brilliance, specifically the "best of" the goals scored by the 'Caps during the 2015 regular season.
The supporter's wishes for a goal-rich 2015 season arrived neatly gift wrapped under the Christmas tree when the club announced the signing of striker Octavio Rivero to a Designated Player contract on Christmas Day 2014. With the new season still months away, supporters looked forward to their beloved Whitecaps matching, or even surpassing, the club record fifty-three goals that were tallied during the "halycon days" of Camilo Sanvezzo's Golden Boot winning season of 2013.
The results, however, were somewhat mixed. While this year's final number of forty-five goals scored was better than the forty-two goals scored in 2014, many of supporters, myself included, feel that the Whitecaps' attack can, and should, be scoring more. Perhaps Santa will bring us another gift this year, but for now let's take a look at Eighty Six Forever's nominees for Goal of the Year:
1.) Octavio Rivero - Orlando City SC vs. Whitecaps FC, March 21st, 2015:
2.) Darren Mattocks - Whitecaps FC vs. Philadelphia Union, May 9th, 2015:
3.) Gershon Koffie - Whitecaps FC vs. Real Salt Lake, May 30th, 2015:
