The Vancouver Whitecaps finished second in the Western Conference during the Major League Soccer regular season, which of course earned them a bye past the 'one and done' first round. It means for the first time ever, the Vancouver Whitecaps are playing in the second round of the post-season, and they'll get to host a playoff match against the Portland TImbers on November 8th. First though, they must play the role of visitor, and make a trip to Portland for the first leg this afternoon.
The extra week of rest must have been music to Carl Robinson's ears, as the Whitecaps are currently slogging through a ridiculous amount of injuries to key players. Captain Pedro Morales has been practicing, although Marc Weber of the Province suggests the second leg in Vancouver is a more likely opportunity for him to play. Meanwhile, Robinson has already said Nicolas Mezquida should be ready to go, giving the Whitecaps some re-reinforcements in their depleted attacking midfield.
As for the Timbers, they'll no doubt be a little tired from having just played on Thursday, something the Whitecaps would be wise to take advantage of, especially with speedsters like Kekuta Manneh at their disposal.
