Fernandez named Player of the Week, Among Accolades

Fernandez named Player of the Week, nominated for Goal of the Week; Laba and Rosales also recognized

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

When the Vancouver Whitecaps took down FC Dallas for just the second time on Saturday, it was on the strength of Sebastian Fernandez and his first half brace. He was named man of the match for his work, and now, he's not only been named Player of the Week, he's also been nominated for Goal of the Week.

Fernandez edged LA Galaxy star Robbie Keane by a single vote (5-4) for the honor of Player of the Week, the first Whitecap to do so this season.

Now, you can help Fernandez add to his hardware this week by voting for him for Goal of the Week.

Fernandez was nommed for his first half header off a beautiful Mauro Rosales cross to make it 1-0 Whitecaps. He's got some stiff competition though, up against Robbie Keane, Alan Gordon, Marco Pappa of Seattle, and Chicago's Robert Earnshaw. You can vote for Fernandez here.

As for other Whitecaps, both Matias Laba and Mauro Rosales were named to the MLS Team of the Week, for their efforts against Dallas. Strangely enough, the Player of the Week didn't make it onto this list, edged out by Robbie Keane and Obafemi Martins. Laba was recognized for his outstanding defensive work, while Rosales was mentioned for playing a role in both Fernandez goals.
