A report today in the 24 Hours newspaper states that Vancouver Whitecaps' brass met with City of Surrey staff earlier this week staff to discuss possibly housing a USL PRO team at Newton Athletic Park for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
The current facility needs a number of upgrades that would cost the City of Surrey in the neighborhood of $214,000 to meet the minimum stadium/facility standards required by USL PRO.
This is the latest development in the Whitecaps quest to field their own USL PRO franchise starting in 2015 since New Westminster city council shot down the Caps' proposal at the end of September. A spokesman for the club said that the team is "still considering options other than Surrey", but would not elaborate further.
