Andre Lewis: Draft Pick Wasted?

The thick leather-bound volume entitled "How NOT to Run a Football Team" might just have added a few pages again this morning, following the Vancouver Whitecaps' selections at the MLS SuperDraft.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

If you didn't hear the collective F-bomb that went off around the city earlier today, let me fill you in: Remember yesterday was the Major League Soccer SuperDraft? And the Vancouver Whitecaps used the second of their first-round picks to select Andre Lewis no. 7 overall?

Well, word from Goal.com was that Lewis ain't coming. According to them, he's signed with the New York Cosmos of the NASL. That was the bad news. The really bad news, if you follow the Vancouver Whitecaps, was that Lewis, who reportedly didn't sign with MLS during the recent MLS Combine, had agreed to a deal with the Cosmos some time before yesterday's draft.

More on the most recent WFC fiasco is available here, at Goal.com.

This is just about all you need if you're a Whitecaps fan. In fact, the situation with the Caps has reached such farcical proportions lately that a noticeable amount of the posts here at 86 Forever have come from out-of-market readers taking the time to send along their condolences.

Late this afternoon, the Vancouver Whitecaps responded on Twitter, stating that Lewis has indeed signed with MLS, and therefore the Whitecaps as well. It all sounds so familiar...

What's that old adage again? Fool me once, shame on you. But fool me twice, shame on me? It's no secret that soccer fans in this city are highly polarized when it comes to assessing the performance of the Whitecaps organization over recent months.

Today's events are hardly likely to change the situation among the fans, but at what point do the Whitecaps reach the point at which they have trouble attracting anybody? Or has the club surpassed that milestone already?

Update:

Below is the Whitecaps statement on the situation:
