Western Canadian Round-Up
Western Canadian Round-Up: The Season Begins in Earnest
From Victoria to Winnipeg and all points in-between, the summer soccer season is finally upon us.
Through most of this country, soccer only really gets started in late May as the weather is simply too awful to allow play in the early spring (the lower mainland being, of course, an honourable exception). So it's always nice, this time of year, when the sun is shining and you need only fire up your web browser to see results from some team from some far-flung corner of the dominion.
And it's been a good couple of weeks for western Canadian teams, too, with many of them compiling winning records. It's a treat when teams are playing soccer in places like Winnipeg and Edmonton. It's even more of a treat when those teams, particularly those in their first year, find themselves doing pretty darned well.
This Eighty Six Forever Western Canadian Round-Up is dedicated to WSA Winnipeg, who have begun their existence in tough conditions against some pretty good teams but have posted very respectable results. And, as always, if you have a competition west of Ontario you'd like to see this space following, drop a comment or an e-mail to the author using the link at the bottom of the page.
Western Canadian Round-Up: (Almost) Everybody's Season is On!
With the kickoff of the match between the Vancouver Whitecaps Women and the Victoria Highlanders Women in Langford yesterday evening, the western Canadian soccer picture for the summer of 2011 has almost become complete. From Major League Soccer down to the Pacific Coast Soccer League, almost every summer team of consequence west of the Canadian Shield is now in action, fighting to win their respective titles and get whatever glory can accrue to them in whatever league they're in.
We at Eighty Six Forever have always been fans of Canadian soccer at whatever level. So, with affairs well underway across the greatest half of this great nation of ours, it was long-past time for a brief look at western Canadian soccer action from Nanaimo to Winnipeg and all points in between. Well, maybe not all points (still waiting for you to get an MLS team, Regina!), but we're doing our best.
If you have results from a high-level competition not listed here that you'd like to see reported, or if there's another competition you'd like the site to track, don't hesitate to send an e-mail using the link at the bottom of the page or report it in the comments. If you'd like me to stop talking about this crap, don't hesitate to tell me that too. After the jump, the year so far in sub-MLS western Canadian soccer.
