I would love to get some thoughts on Morales. He has been here a little while and I think we can have some preliminary discussions about him.
First, I would like to say that I like how his playing time has been handled, whether on purpose or not. Players coming in from overseas seem to struggle at first in the league. I think by playing him regularly but having him subbed off is a good strategy. Make sure he can support the team but do not overwork him.
Second, it is clear the team (justifiably) revolves around him. It seems like the team is always trying to get the ball to him and let him do his thing. And what a thing it is right? I watch him in awe some times. He seems to have the ball on a string and can be surrounded by three or four players and somehow gets away from them with the ball. Following he makes a blind pass across the field that is right on target. Each game, I think I vocalize 'wow' multiple times with regards to his play.
Third, despite the 'wow' factor, I am a bit concerned. He was suppose to come in and be a set piece specialist. He has not looked it that is for sure. It would seem that the reason for this is his back. I am concerned about this. I would rather seem him rested a bit and be able to play 2 of 3 or 3 of 4 at 100% than all games at 75%. The difference in skill/ability is very clear when he is injured. The second half of the Toronto game he was clearly not well. He stopped taking corners, he was not moving well, his passing accuracy was down. It did not look good.
Therefore, I worry about Morales long-term. I think he is a key piece to the team and it is clear that his back struggles with our turf. That leads me to believe that he will not remain on the team for long (year, maybe two?). For his own health and ability to play longer it would appear that he cannot play for a team where their home field is turf.
Morales is clearly the best player the team has had and deserves to be the highest paid as the entire game plan focuses around him. I think he has the potential to be worth every penny. I am just curious whether he WILL be worth every penny because his health seems to be a major concern/problem.
What is your evaluation of Morales so far and the expectations long-term?
