"We are very pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with TEAM Radio," said Rachel Lewis, Vancouver Whitecaps FC chief operating officer. "Since we announced our partnership in 2011 with the launch of our MLS franchise, we’ve seen fantastic content and programming that have informed and entertained sports fans across the province. We are excited to continue our relationship with TEAM Radio, and Bell Media as a whole, as we grow our sport collaboratively."
But the news actually sucks. While the games will be covered on TEAM 1410, the ever excellent Whitecaps FC Daily show will be a thing of the past. Instead of an hour of interviews, news and commentary from Pete Schaad and guests we will now get a half hour of Whitecaps coverage on Thursday evening from 6-630. Read the fine print:
Peter will now be able to provide more exclusive Whitecaps FC content on a number of Bell Media platforms, including TEAM 1040, teamradio.ca, TSN.ca and more. This includes a 30-minute weekly show on TEAM 1040 with Moj on Thursdays at 6pm. Peter will also file a daily one minute "Whitecaps FC Report" that will air on both TEAM stations every weekday afternoon. In addition to the regular interviews with players throughout the week, we have increased our weekly guests features to three – president Bob Lenarduzzi, head coach Carl Robinson, and now captain Jay DeMerit.
Thirty minutes a week on a show with "Moj", who may well take up 20 of those minutes with his inane banter. PLus a full minute a day. A full minute! Not including the bumpers, theme music and "brought to you by" ads.
The Whitecaps have now secured media deals that take an excellent in depth radio show off the air and black out all of their games to MLS Live subscribers. Oh sure, you can watch stuff on your Bell phone (I have Rogers), but honestly...are the Whitecaps trying to disappear during their 40th anniversary?
