Eric Hassli's jaw-dropping goal earns Whitecaps star a trip to the ESPYS
His jaw-dropping goal against the Seattle Sounders has earned Vancouver Whitecaps striker Eric Hassli a ticket to the ESPN Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Known as the ESPYS, Hassli has been nominated for the Best Play award for his June 11 goal against Seattle in a Major League Soccer match.
On the play, the big Frenchman collected an errant clearance, popped the ball in the air with his right foot, then volleying it into the far corner of the goal over Sounders' 'keeper Kasey Keller.
The goal gave the visiting Whitecaps a 2-2 tie. It has received more than five million online hits.
The Best Play category began with some of the top plays of the last sporting year matched up head-to-head in a Round of 16, with fans voting online.
Last week the polls closed and Hassli's goal advanced to the final eight contenders.
People voting in the Round of 8 can chose between Hassli's goal and a dunk by NBA Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin of the L.A. Clippers over seven-foot-one Russian Tim Mozgoz of the New York Knicks.
The winner will be announced at the end of the broadcast.
