Which Whitecap Worries You The Most?
A pretty poor effort against FC Dallas has certainly raised a lot of questions; "Did the Whitecaps over achieve in the first few matches?", "Will Hassli ever play three games in succession?" And "What was it about the turf at Empire Field that the Dallas players found so irresistible?"
Certainly the team as a whole were culpable for the defeat, but let's ignore the rational arguments for the moment and slip happily into the the mob mentality of blaming one individual for everything that is wrong with the side. So the question today asks you to nominate the Whitecap that causes you the most concern
But before we gather our pitchforks and hunt down the hapless scapegoat let's take a look at our last poll which asked where the Whitecaps stand in your soccer affections. Rather pleasingly over 60% of you regard the Whitecaps as your main or only team, with another 33% placing them behind their other favourites. One of you wanted to sell everybody shoes.
Now, in the spirit of Easter, let's pick a hero to crucify!

Out of the options given, I think I have to vote for Choo-Choo Chiumiento.
The weird thing is that I was never the biggest Nolly fan in the D2 days. I thought he had cement hands and poor distribution. Now, in MLS, I think he still has cement hands and poor distribution and yet I find myself one of his more staunch defenders simply because he’s still a fine reflex goalkeeper and he’s not letting through shots other keepers should have had.
Camilo and Hassli are both, I think, more-or-less doing the job even when they’re not scoring. And Teitur I don’t worry about much. So Chiumiento it is.

Another Option(s)
My biggest worry is Blake Wagner and how much longer he will be on the team. He is horribly out of position, was AWOL on the winning goal by Dallas. Also is J DeMerit another Marlon JAmes?
None of the above?
Chiumiento, Camilo, and Hassli have probably been the most consistent players for the caps this season so far, despite Hassli’s poor attendance due to being carded, and Camilo’s inability to really bear down on a good opportunity and finish with a good strike.
Nolly has had a few matches that he’s played quite well and been aggressive coming off his line, despite a somewhat weak 2nd goal vs FC Dallas. He has unfortunately not received solid defending in front of him. And TT has had his hand forced by injuries and unfortunate (or perhaps poorly awarded) suspensions.
In my books, the weakest single players for the Caps have been near their back end. Specifically Leathers, Wagner, and anyone playing midfield not named Chiumiento or Dunfield have been lackluster in the last few matches. Hopefully once DeMerit, Salinas, Tiebert, Nanchoff all return that problem will solve itself.
Central midfield quality depth
…it’s either injured (Thorrington, Dunfield, and others) absent on international duty (Koffie) or simply not very good (Brovsky, Harmse).
As for Camilo, I hope he gets it going again. He even comes with a prefab theme song courtesy of a great Vancouver band, Said the Whale:
oh oh oh, Camilo-o

Most disappointed by DeMerit
I’m sad and angry about his groin and his decision to play on it.
That is such a weird thing to say.
The only reason I’m disappointed in him was that I had so much pinned on him at the start of the season. He played well against Toronto and with him healthy, I think that backline would have been well whipped into shape, even with their present configuration.
Pissed that he’s out for a while. I hope he doesn’t become our Jonathan Woodgate.
Also...
…this is a pretty mean post. I don’t like deriding my team at the best of times, and the truth is, I think they’ve played well above their capabilities in most games. Given the appalling injury situation, this bunch of B-list other-thans is doing a pretty good job of entertaining us.
So yes, I’m disappointed, but I would love to be having this conversation about Nanchoff, Salinas, DeMerit, Davies, Teibert and Cannon. Wouldn’t you?
Also, Atiba Harris gets my real vote.
All of these options were taken from postings on various Whitecaps forums.
Clearly the people named are the standout players from the Whitecaps who may have disappointed but are potentially quality performers. I considered De Merit as an option but he never really came up in the discussions.
“None of the above” is a legitimate option I think but I suspect we all know that anyway.

none of the above
What about Blake Wagner, or Jeb Brovsky? I would much rather crucify either of them than any of the choices you have provided.

Considering I never expected anything from Wagner or Brovsky in the first place, I’m not in much of a position to be disappointed by them. I’m probably more grateful that they are there, otherwise we’d have to field 9 man teams at this point.

Surprised that TT is picking up so many votes. I think it’s hard to argue what he could have done that differently given how his resources have been limited

Waiting to long to change out players ie, leaving Hassli in too long. The ref had words with him several times prior to the card. Short handed in Houston; why would you leave a MF/FW in Vancouver when he played all last year in the Tampa heat? He could have been the spark as a sub to get the team rolling. That said, the last match TT really did not have much choice. I think he just needs to use his subs to better advantage and get them in there sooner.
The collective inability to win rather than draw
is what worries me the most. With wins against New England and Chivas we’d be looking VERY good. I don’t have individual players who “worry” me, as I’m still getting to know them all.
